The Background
BioLegend develops world-class, cutting-edge antibodies and reagents for biomedical research, manufactured in their state-of-the-art facility in San Diego, CA. BioLegend’s mission is to accelerate research and discovery by providing researchers the highest quality products, superior customer service, and exceptional technical support. The company has experienced continued growth, and they recently built an expansive 8-acre campus designed to support future expansion, provide an attractive environment for new talent, and better serve their global customers.
The Challenge
BioLegend stores thousands of high-value products that are utilized in critical life science research. These products, often stored in small vials, are kept at cold temperatures (39°F). To ensure the comfort of employees, BioLegend wanted to decouple storing the products from the picking process by picking outside of the cold room. With the goal of continuing to provide best-in-class customer service through accurate and efficient order fulfillment while ensuring the safety and comfort of the employees, BioLegend sought an innovative solution for their new state-of-the-art headquarters.

The Solution
BioLegend needed a solution that offered dense storage in a small footprint and one that could keep up with the demand for fast picking. They chose the OPEX Perfect Pick HD for its speed and flexibility. The system, constructed inside 1500 square feet of cold storage space, stores 2990 totes totaling 6500 cubic feet of storage. To keep staff safe and comfortable, the totes are routed outside of the system to external pick stations. The flexibility of the system allows BioLegend to have the high-speed picking process they need to provide fast, secure order fulfillment to their customers.
